Emergency Lighting in the past has consisted of a combination of Exit signs with some form of lighting either in separate fixtures or as a combination of the two.
The exit sign usually had small fluorescent bulbs and a battery rated 90-minutes to provide power when the lights would go out. The lighting was usually in the form of a floodlight utilizing halogen bulb(s) with a battery backup.
Local codes usually required a sign over the door and through hallways pointing to where people could exit in an emergency. Likewise, floodlights would be placed to light the way for exiting.
Local codes usually required the signs and floodlights to be tested monthly so you knew they were working in case of an emergency.
In my honest opinion, I see thousands of exit signs not working and the same for floodlights as the batteries are dead. In a real emergency, let's hope everyone remembers how to evacuate the building. Liability is on you, as insurance companies like this loophole of non-working emergency equipment so that they don't have to pay out.
Today, emergency lighting has switched over to LEDs almost exclusively. Providing the same 90-minute window for evacuation. But they still need to be tested every 30 days.
Another item that can be added to emergency lighting is photoluminescent lighting which does not use any electricity. These "strips" glow in the dark and lead people to safety.
We at Ghost Energy Services, LLC can provide all your emergency lighting needs including the photoluminescent option.
We can also set up a schedule with you to test your emergency lighting on a monthly basis to ensure it is operating. We can replace batteries as needed, upgrade to LEDs and install photoluminescent where beneficial.
We urge you to stay on top of your emergency lighting.
