HVAC equipment is rated in SEER. SEER ratings can go from 13-21. The higher the number the more efficient the unit.

14 SEER is the standard in the northern half of the U.S. with 15 SEER being the standard in the South. Local codes vary.

Here in the Delmarva area both Maryland and Delaware require a minimum rating of 15 SEER. Remember this is a minimum number. As you go higher, the initial unit costs more, but the energy savings increase. By purchasing a higher SEER unit the energy savings will pay for the increased cost in a few years. And the additional savings over the years might even pay for a replacement unit when your old one dies. High efficiency ductless HVAC units are a great option for facility renovation or new installs.

Today, one should be looking for changeouts of old HVAC motors to EC motors and EC motors with integral variable speed drives. Coupled with the controls there are dramatic savings as the motors run at optimal speed and the laws of physics provide dramatic energy savings as the speed slows down.

We work with our partners to provide you EC motors and drives and can help you replace old motors and controls working in conjunction with our HVAC partners.

Additional savings can be gained by switching the v-belts out to "X" belts (cogged belts), installing economizers.

Obviously, maintaining the unit, changing filters and ensuring the integrity of panels and all working parts will save you additional money.
